Hell, i've had a 5mbit ADSL2+ line for the last 3 years and would keep that over getting VM back any day.

I completely disagree here.
I am on VM 152mb package and when i run a pingtest on pingtest.net my jitter is always either 2 or 3ms whatever the time of day.
I have a friend who is on Sky ADSL2+ his jitter at its lowest is 7ms and his graph is a lot worse than mine.
