When you are not connected to Virgin Media's cable network you are required to authenticate to send mail. Virgin Media, like most providers, do not allow just anyone to send mail via their servers without logging in first.

Virgin Mobile (the mobile network) technically has nothing to do with Virgin Media (the cable network). They are separate networks. Virgin Mobile is seen as an external network and all external users are required to authenticate.
However sometimes the rules for on-net authentication aren't the same as those for off-net.

For instance, if you are on-net you may still have old details in which only use the first part of your email address as the username or your SMTP port is set to be 25. This can be allowed this on-net due to historical compatibility and because your VM IP address is logged at the same time. However if you are off-net you have to use the correct current details, as there is no other traceability.
