As far as I know, android cannot read the file system of a Mac. Hence only being able to access using another app/client.

I found this myself after connecting a Mac formated USB HDD to my Note 3 and couldn't see any files. After searching the web that was all I could really find out.

So you will need to use a remote access client app.
