This suggestion that Rooney could be a liability ignores that he has been dismissed only six times in 622 matches. In the interests of balance it also needs remembering that the tally could have been more: he was fortunate not to be sent off for a 2003 skirmish with Portsmouth’s Steve Stone, a clattering of Spain’s Iker Casillas and Carlos Marchena in 2004 and some filthy challenges on Northern Ireland’s Keith Gillespie and then Chris Baird in 2005. Rooney is not alone in occasional discipline; the best player presently on the planet, Cristiano Ronaldo, has seen red eight times.
