The foul wasn't that bad. He clearly just wanted to stop the counter attack, which you see happen in nearly every game, definitely wasn't "assault" but a deserved red. And the goal was clearly offside.

It was a malicious attack...only done to attack the player...petulance to the extreme. He didn't trip him...he kicked him. that is assault, same as a punch...though...I guess for man utd supporters..that probably is called love play...something to do to the wife on a regular basis

you cannot the compare the two.. Rooney kicked the guy deliberately...the other was a trip..assault should never be condoned.
Puzzled why the ref should consider assault as something to let go....rooney did it intentionally...he got the red
