Not the same situation at all - Virgin Media have issued the box to you, and as you say, not long enough for it to be an issue. Reconnecting a 'found' box is different.

Sky sell you the box as part of your minimum term subscription, Virgin Media don't. Sky charge to fix boxes outside a warranty period, Virgin Media don't. Different business model.
