When the turd is still visible, attacking it with a high pressure water jet is always effective ... a super soaker type water pistol is good, if you have one.
You basically use the jet to slice it in pieces ...
If it's lurking round the bend, then super-strength drain block bleach is worth a go. A good one has about three times the concentration of bleach in it than your average Domestos.
