I suppose you turn Radio Scotland SportsSound up then for the english commentary!!

They were going to trial a euronews style approach to choice of language. but I think that died a death due to funding.

The channel helps promote the normalisation of gaelic, and stop the decline. so even if you don't understand gaelic, there are learning programs, children's programmes which help encourage use and exposure of the language.

Its horses for courses, I think if you are happy with subtitles, then you can merrily watch it. If you don't then don't worry about it.

I think in Scotland, we are either gaelic speakers or have exposure to it through tv, radio, school or road signs!
S4C helped stop the decline of the Welsh language in Wales. All the signs are BBC Alba is exceeding expectations.
Testing right now on Sky and Virgin Media.

Rumours on Digital Spy say English commentary on BBC Alba is set to launch by end of September - Not confirmed by BBC.
