Re: Slow Uploads to Youtube....
The way I would look at it is like this. Asking how long an "average" video takes to upload is highly ambiguous because it doesn't tell anyone about the two main factors in determining the time; upload speed and file size. File size/upload speed = upload time.
In order to gauge whether things aren't running as they should I would look at it this way: I am assuming you are 100/6 which gives you a maximum upload speed of 750k/sec so if everything was running perfectly a 1gb file would take 22 mins to upload. If it is taking 10 hours then it is taking 29 times longer than it would in perfect conditions.
I would agree that 10 hours sucks vs the 22 mins it could potentially be done in but the way to look at it is like this: I am sure there are tens of thousands of people uploading videos at any one time and although youtube will have multiple gigabit connections they are probably very very busy all the time. On top of that, if the server is taking 1 hour to process a 1gb file then that says something about the load on the server as well.
If you want to narrow it down to a) to VM's connection to youtube b) the youtube bandwidth c) the server load (i.e. a problem specific to youtube and not effecting anything else you are going to do), I would run a couple of speed tests the next time you want to upload something and see what upload speed you get to VM's internal test servers and then to one of the servers outside VM's network.
If you are looking to do large file uploads or multiple uploads, I would try and schedule them just before you go to bed and let them run over night if you can queue them. VM are very tight on their upstream bandwidth which is why your connection isn't 10:1 and with all the stuff going on in the evening and weekends I imagine there isn't a lot of free juice on the network. If your speed tests come back saying 6mbits but you are still only uploading to youtube at 29k/sec (which is what it works out at) then something is wrong.
