I thought the opposite. By not showing too much of him throughout the film it builds suspense and makes the film better. I think people forget this and are spoiled by modern moves being all action. If you had seen the directors first movie called monsters you'd know what to expect.

It's Godzilla, surely you weren't expecting an amazing in depth story. I think they tried to make the plot more involved by including the family stuff to try and make you feel more emotion.
