...And what exactly are the hard drives and how are they connected?

Also if all you're concerned with is getting a Windows Experience Index score of higher than 5.9 you are wasting your money. It is impossible with hard drives, because Microsoft has specifically capped the score for hard drives at... 5.9. It won't allow you to get a higher score without an SSD.
