I don't see any reason why they can't just launch it on the EPG as normal without customers having to register. Maybe the reason is psychological marketing in that Sky hope that people will believe that they are getting something for nothing and it will also draw more attention to the channel
I take it as VM customers, we won't have to register our interest with VM?
Will we just get the channel automatically if we subcribe to the Sports channels already?

Good point. I would imagine that it will just appear on the VM EPG, as I doubt VM want their customers to take up the Sky free broadband offer
