Yes, perhaps the reason for the delay of SS3&4 HD is because they want to launch them all altogether. As Sky Sports 5 hasn't been officially announced yet, I also wonder if this is the reason for the secrecy surrounding the launch of the missing Sky Sports missing HD channels.

As for Virgin getting the channel, surely it's a must. Just not sure about HD version of the channel I'm afraid.
It's crossed my mind that Sky have done another Sky Atlantic on VM and let them have the full stable of channels, only to launch a new channel afterwards.

There has also been speculation about where Sky will get the SD slot for thix channel, but I think that Sky may launch this as an HD channel only. Perhaps they are going to employ the same strategy as they did when wanting to migrate customers from analogue to digital ie the carrot of new services at no extra cost to those on the new service, then the stick approach of slowly dropping the SD variants.

The popularity of sport, the cost of dual transmissions and the length of time that HD has been around makes me think that this is a viable strategy for Sky to adopt.

But can we rule out Sky Sports 5 being a rebranding of the red button service/Sky Sports Xtra service? It's a possibility, surely?

The way that it currently loops through on the test/glitch to the info about the channel makes me think that the EPG could stay the same with SS5 being an "interactive" service activated via the red button is possible. Potentially you would just "activate" Sky Sports 5 by pressing the red button and it wouldn't appear on the EPG as a channel (as with their red button content currently).
It's a possibility yes, but I think that Sky would prefer to market that they are launching a brand new channel at no extra cost.

The saving on the EPG fee that other broadcasters would make by using this method of delivery doesn't really apply to Sky owned channels, as the fee is fed straight back into the Sky machine.

Perhaps "activate" means press the button to launch, rather than 'activate' as in call Customer Services
