Hehe. Well Raspberry Pis (or Virgin Media DIR-615's) are actually ideal platforms for build-it-yourself solutions like that. All you'd need is a 12v power supply and a transistor. And a few lines of code. You could still easily use it for watching "cheap films" as well.

I've been tempted to build similar things with a DIR-615 and some relay switches for 240v sockets (commercial products cost £30+ per socket), but that's slightly more dangerous when you get it wrong than a 12v supply to a Superhub.
