You don't actually need the RF cable to go to the TV but I tend to be a belt and braces type of person so would want to make sure my smart TV was set up ready in case the BT box died mid program. A quick change of source on the TV remote and you are up and running.

I know it worked for my when my VM signal died, having the RF cable already in place made the it easier.
