I seem to recall a news article that said Sky were only willing to commit to a one year deal with Virgin. This was because, at that point, there was no deal between Virgin and BT and perhaps didn't want to commit to a too favourable a deal over the longer term.
Given the agreement Virgin and BT eventually came to, it will be interesting to see how that effects negotiations this time round
