Personally, I can afford both consoles, but I've taken the decision to wait and see which console has games that *interest* me. I did that when I chose an Xbox 360 and also when I chose both a PS2 and Xbox. IMO, it's nice to have good graphics, and given the choice between running a game at 720P or 1080P, I'll choose 1080P with as much detail as the machine I am using (be it a Console or PC) or game can muster. But, even with the best graphics currently available, if a game has a crap storyline or is simply not well designed, I am not interested.
