You're right if the engines had failed at 35,000 feet they could have glided for many miles and possibly landed.

In the event of a complete engine failure, planes have a wind turbine that can is deployed to keep essential electrical and hydraulic systems workings, so they could still have used the radio.

You're also right that a large debris field suggests a mid-air explosion, whilst a compact debris field suggests impact.

It's all speculation, but my money would still be on some kind of pilot error.

Modern aircraft, especially on a carrier such as this, fail mechanically very rarely.
Yeah its called a RAT "Ram Air Turbine"

Unless it was taken by the pilot to landing strip by the pilot for reasons unknown, after he turned off the transponder.

Is this normal for phones to do this?
I know that when I call people and their phone is off it either says the mobile you are calling is off or goes straight to voice mail.

Now this seems odd as normally all phones would be off as required by most airlines during flight.

My question why are they not getting any signal from the Black boxes?

These are tough buggers, designed to withstand high impact speeds, battery life of 30 days minimum, though can be longer if conditions are right, plus they are activated when contact with water, or loss of power they switch to emergency mode.

another reason it cannot be found it that it broke up and debris fell into the jungle which could swallow up any wreckage quite easily.
