I know that when I call people and their phone is off it either says the mobile you are calling is off or goes straight to voice mail.
Now this seems odd as normally all phones would be off as required by most airlines during flight.

That's just bollocks.
The plane hasn't landed anywhere, been abducted by a UFO or crashed near an island that moves around a bit.
It's evident that the plane didn't explode or break up in flight.
It must have hit the water at a steep angle. There was very little visible wreckage from the Air France crash, and that fell from a similar altitude.
