If you can stretch to around £50 you'd be much better off going for a pair of 2.0 bookshelf speakers. £40 is at that borderline where you either settle for not very good or add a little more to get something much better.

Edifier r1600t are on sale more often than not for around £50 and Creative T20's are around the same price.

Or even try and get either of the above second hand.
