The picture behind the car in the car park at the beach means is called "End of the Road". Basically everything after they get the guns put to their heads is all a metaphor and never really happened.
You may well be right, I saw it differently though.

The characters were not killed at the beach. They figured out at the beach they were being watched constantly and could, in theory, be killed at any time. I think the "bad guy" knows it would be more fun to torture them as a constant punishment, rather then kill them and end it all. I think the characters realize this after they are spared at the beach, and all know that death is the only relief they will get in the future. As such they are all happy to be driven off the unfinished road, with the ultimate aim of ending their lives. Let's also not forget they all look across at another car and see themselves under the Tony Blair mask (i.e. Baxter is his own "killer"/kills himself.) After this scene Baxter asks if they think it is all over, we do not hear anyone say they think it is. This suggests to me, again, that the characters know they will never escape the "bad guy" whilst alive. From this theory, someone else could easily revive the show with the four of them surviving the crash.
