4G with one bar will be perfectly reliable for texts. 4G is incapable of calls so calls coming through will depend on your underlying 3G or 2G signal. You could have a hundred bars of 4G but without a 3G or 2G signal no calls will ever come through.

Your 4G will switch back down to 3G long before the 4G signal gets weak enough to be unreliable. But if 3G isn't available, well then, nothing you set on your phone can ever change that.
