As has been said, some phones/apps automatically convert sms messages above a certain length to mms messages. You should be able to disable this feature in 'settings'. My wife also got caught for some MMS charges by attaching certain animated emoticons to her texts. I'm not talking simple ': )' emoticons here, more the animated type.
