However upon calling VM I am told they are billed as MMS! As are group messages and any messages over 162 characters.
I am amazed at a text of 163 characters can be charged as MMS. Is this right? It is what I was told today.
How much more of what I was told is correct and how can it be the case?
I must add that all additional charges were rescinded when I enquired.
Any info appreciated.

I sympathise with you. I recently had a bill showing MMS messages by the dozen supposedly sent from my phone when I was in Ireland, and I didn't even use my phone there. I got them all cancelled (after some shouting) and had the ability to send MMS messages cancelled on my phone.
