I think I have found a way round this.
Although Avast would not scan my OE folder where the messages are stored direct from the program, I have found that if I manually go to the folder I can scan that folder for virues.
I hope I am doing this correctly as it certainly speeded up the time it normally takes to download over 140 large messages.
You appear to be quite knowledgeable on this so perhaps you could give your view on my manually scanning the OE folder where messages are stored.
