But the chances are that the SD version is just a scaled down version of the HD version. So although production costs have increased, it's just a technological advance.

It's probably justifiable to charge extra fees to early adopters, that's invariably what happens anyway. It's debatable how long that can continue, it's probably a little late in the day for VM to introduce a surcharge for HD.
