Plus, US channels never went widescreen for their SD broadcasts (there may be one or two exceptions though), so over there widescreen = HD.
Agree on the bitrate, too. While modern TVs and TiVo can upscale a good SD picture quite nicely (CG movies on DVD look lovely on my HDTV, although obviously Blu-ray looks much nicer), a low quality SD signal will just result in a low quality upscaled picture.
