Re: Virgin Media to start charging for Security

So why have I got this marketing email offering it free for 12 months? Could it be because I got hit by STM the last couple of nights?

Dear Mr Kwikbreaks,

Get more from your Virgin Broadband service

We've noticed that you enjoy being online, especially in the evening. So here are some useful tips, to help you get the most out of your service:

1. Download big files after 11pm

We don't limit how much you use the internet, but at our busiest time (between 4pm and 11pm Monday to Friday and 11am to 11pm weekends) your speed may be reduced for a short time by our traffic management system. For more info, visit virginmedia.com/traffic.

If you're streaming TV or films then there's no need to change, but if you regularly download big files to use later, then it's easy to schedule them for after 11pm. Find out how at virginmedia.com/peaktimefaq

2. Someone eating up your connection?

You might not be aware of it, but if someone at home is downloading large files it'll slow you down. File sharing is the most common thing that'll affect your speed. So check other computers in your house for file sharing programs such as BitTorrent, uTorrent, Vuse, BitComet and Shareaza. Don't forget, you mustn't use our services to breach copyright - virginmedia.com/vmterms

3. Is your WiFi connection secure?

Check that your Super Hub or wireless router is password protected and you've got encryption switched on. Neighbours or anyone in range could be piggy-backing your connection and slowing you down. Learn how to change these settings at virginmedia.com/help/wireless.

4. Security software's up to date and active

Virgin Media have partnered with F-Secure to bring you F-Secure SAFE** an award-winning internet security product FREE for 12 months. It works on up to five devices and covers all the major security threats whether that's on your home network or out and about. It also lets you set parental controls so your family are protected from inappropriate content. Learn more and download it at virginmedia.com/security.

We strongly recommend that you follow these tips - especially the times that you download large files - so you get the best broadband performance.

Want to check how much you're downloading or uploading? Several tools can help like tbbMeter (thinkbroadband.com/tbbmeter.html *) and you'll find others at softpedia.com *.

Kind regards,

Ken Oaten
