I'm unconvinced that a GPS unit is so inaccurate (on the same device) that one time it's 0.2km short, then the next day 0.2km long
It's never inaccurate to the same amount. Phones take a periodic 'snapshot' which by its nature will never be the same twice.

I went out on a 3.2 mile (approx 5k) run last night as per my Garmin. The Nike+ app on my phone recorded it at 3.5 miles. If I was using that to get a good time on a 5k it would be useless.

Fine for those with regular access to a track.
