It would be forgivable if Wenger sometimes finds himself dreaming about how Van Persie might have thrived in front of his current midfield but, in Giroud, an increasingly worthy replacement is emerging. Giroud provided the assist for two of Arsenal’s goals and, with Arsenal having failed in summer bids for Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suárez, it would seem that Giroud’s form is forcing Wenger to rethink his transfer priorities.

“Giroud is amazing,” Wenger said. “If you compare his technical level when he arrived to today, he is highly improved. I was thinking always his second season would be decisive. To adapt to the kind of game we play takes time. I was not too worried when we didn’t bring in anybody because I thought he has a chance to develop. We have a squad that, number and quality wise, is very, very good. We are not desperate now in January but, if there is a good opportunity, why not?”
