The key word here is "online" only, so not through Sky box or Virgin etc

Their website is misleading and wrong. You only legally need a tv license to watch or record a programme as it is being broadcast. So streaming online or through a box is irrelevant. The problem is even though this is the case, if you told them that you only watch catchup through the various types of box they are likely not to believe you. Legally it is ok though
