I think it's all about the content. Linear channels I think will be in a long term decline soon as alternative methods of viewing content gain traction.

When we first got cable, we were wowed by the 20 or so additional channels available to us. Then we went digital and were bowled over by 100s of extra channels. Then in came video on demand, which was fantastic and started to change the way people watched TV - gradually at first, but now a significant majority use VOD on a regular basis. Now in comes Netflix. You can see where this is all leading, can't you?

I predict that within the next decade, the majority of all viewing by cable customers at least will no longer be through linear channels.
