Re: BBC to launch BBC One + 1, BBC Store and revamped i player

Seriously? There are plenty of channels that show almost nothing except repeats, yet they do just fine with a +1.

+1 and catchup address two different segments of the viewing public. It is a generational issue to a certain extent, with younger people more willing to dive in and use catch up services like iPlayer and older ones less willing to do something new. +1 addresses those that don't want to engage with the technology, and also those that don't like to watch tv on a computer and don't own a TV capable of displaying iPlayer. And there are a lot of those.

The reason the BBC has not run any +1 channels until now is that they believed they had devised a comprehensive catchup solution with the iPlayer. The reason we are now going to get +1 from the BBC is that they have realised the iPlayer is never going to reach as far as they want it to.
