I wonder if part of the problem here is the innate 'belief' that women couldn't do such things to their children. We're routinely given the impression that domestic abuse is very much a male v. female/child scenario despite the fact that there are very large numbers of men who suffer terrible abuse by their female partners and are appallingly treated by the authorities. Aspects of our family law system are heavily weighted towards women and this further reinforces the impression that women ought to be trusted ahead of their male partners. Perhaps if the authorities treated mothers and fathers in the same way and with the same degree of suspicion they wouldn't so often be taken in by evil, brutal women and our children would be safer as a result.
