OK that's not good - several physios have told me that if you get the shin splint pain while resting (or anything as well as running) then it's most likely a stress fracture. Get along to your local NHS physio before doing any further exercise. It's generally treated the same way but you might need specialist advice.

Most specialist running shops will check your gait, some charge for it (then deduct the amount from the price of any shoes you buy) but I always go to my local Go Outdoors, they do it for free.

Compression socks 'can' help but they tend to just mask the problem. They can get you through a race but should only be used as a part of rehabbing your leg. Once your 6 weeks of rest is up it's a good idea to use them then but run (or whatever) at a much slower pace and less distance for the first 2 to 3 weeks as you build back up.
