The current boxes don't have the hardware required to encode the video so it is suitable to playback on a mobile device. They could possibly do it via the cloud as another option.

ah! i doubt they will then.
If the new owners have their own box and software i'd imagine tivo will be phased out once the contract ends they'll see that as a big way to save money i'd guess?
