The tuner "sees" any contigous block of channels it's pointed at, could just as easily be 10 channels of pay-per-view porn and 6 channels of DOCSIS...

Perhaps. Though the (non-VM) base version of the modem itself had been sold with 8 channels to other customers, they could have just pulled that firmware but would have lost or had to pay extra to stick the VM logo back on it

£1 a modem isn't that bad considering they used to charge £75 for a subsidized Superhub 1...
