How come Virgin Media get near to the speeds advertised and BT fall short ?
The telephone lines in most places have been in there for years and are old simple copper lines. All the ones I have seen have looked filthy. VM don't use any telephone lines for their fibre and the copper coax cable they use is new, has an inner and outer core with shielding and its dimensions are good for radio frequencies.

So the BT connections are making the most of old wiring already in place compared to VM's newly installed cables which are specific to the job.

VM don't use anyone else's wiring. They put their own telephone line in and their own coax which serves the tv and broadband.

Sure someone can explain it better and more neatly lol.
