It is of course a distortion to ignore the effects of inflation. For example, the British transfer record £3.75m in 1993 would equate to a lot more in today's money. Rooney, at the time dubbed the new Gascoigne would cost more than £25m today. Rio Ferdinand was £30m in 2001. But that is your wont.
As for an objective view:
City and United finished level on points in 11/12.
United strengthened their squad.
City lost De Jong, Adam Johnson, and Balotelli (for 2nd half of season)
Signings: Garcia, Maicon, Sinclair, Rodwell.
That transfer activity weakened City's team.
Obvious conclusion = Utd win the title.
BTW, net spend last season was barely £10m
