Therefore, it would be sensible to argue Newcastle over performed by finishing 1 point ahead of Chelsea. But in the same breath, Chelsea and more so Liverpool significantly underperformed in the league to the extent where Newcastle finished about where they should.
What can be said without doubt is that this seasons 16th place just 5 points above the relegation zone was a disgraceful underachievement.

Mancini wasn't ignored of the manager of the year award 11/12, he missed out for very good reasons. Not many people buy into the mind games front, it really did look like he gave up.
