Tiote: Us playing in Championship just unthinkable

by Mark Douglas, The Journal
May 4 2013

CHEICK Tioté says it is unthinkable Newcastle United might be lining up in the Championship next season, writes MARK DOUGLAS.

Tioté’s own form has been under the microscope of late, but he has come out fighting in a series of interview this week – all of which are intended to emphasise the togetherness and unity in the black-and-white camp.

Tioté says Newcastle are the “biggest club in the country” and must “fight” today and over the next three weeks to preserve their cherished Premier League status.

He said: “I think because everyone knows about Newcastle it’s the biggest club in England.
“I can’t imagine Newcastle going into the Championship.

“When you look at the city, when you look at the fans, the stadium, it’s full all the time.

“I can’t imagine it. That’s why we have to fight to stay in the Premier League.”

Asked whether the players are worried about relegation, Tioté demurs.

“No I don’t think so. We have confidence and we know it’s going to be hard,” he said.

“I never think we’re going to go down next season.

“We have to do everything to win and if we do so then everything will be fine.”

Like the rest of the city, Tioté has been struggling to pin-point the reason for United’s sudden slump.

Since Benfica they have gained just one point from an available nine and have managed to cede a huge goal difference advantage over Aston Villa.

Tiote added: “When we go on the pitch we try to win the game but sometimes we miss something, we have had games where we were so unlucky and we lost.

“I still think we have more quality than last season, but sometimes it’s like that.

“I can’t blame the manager or the players, it’s everyone. Everyone has been affected, the best thing at the moment is to stick together and focus on the games.”

Tioté’s explanation for his own form and that of the team is injuries – to himself and other key men in the midfield engine room – and a lack of consistency.

He said: “This season has been difficult, it’s been different to last season because sometimes I was injured, not fit, I was up and down – maybe that’s why we didn’t perform well.

“When you look at the squad there were too many injuries.

“Yohan Cabaye was injured, myself or some other player.

“We didn’t play maybe 10 games all together.”
