Wasted is subjective. It's a favorite term for people who want to promise more whilst taking less, politicians who say they can cut taxes and improve services by tackling 'waste'. It's the same with football. Yes Arsenal have wasted money, but other clubs have as well. Even United blew far too much on renewing Rooney's contract, the Young deal never really paid off, Bebe was a unmitigated diaster and Hernandez would be complained about if United didn't have Van Persie to score a bucket load of goals.

Waste is a natural occurrence in football. We can argue about the scale of waste and which player costs too much, is paid too much, and so on. We are addressing the contract situation and a lot of players' contracts expire at the end of this season. So that's a good thing.

However I don't think the difference between struggling for forth and fighting for the title is 'waste'.

Well our wages are the 4th biggest in the league. It does add up.
