1. They may be omni in the horizontal plane but the OP is directly above the
router. An omni in both V & H planes is not possible with a single aerial. With two aerials at 2.4GHz there would be too much destructive interference.
2. Not in the last one I saw opened. The signal strength of an omni at an angle above/below the horizon is gain dependant.
There is a reason many post here about bad signal quality from a SH, but not so much of those with an external omni. Like my old DG Netgear or my now FG one. Two aerials are used for diversity reception and if not implemented properly...see the OP query.
