In the meantime you might like to confirm that at least Webmail on same account functions correctly and will send (and receive) without a problem?
Also how many ntlworld email addresses are you using? I still have 15 and occasionally a mixture of IMAP and POP3 will both cough on incoming while attempting to also send via the smtp.ntlworld.com and virginmedia.com servers.
