West Midlands Police said they have been given authority by the Crown Prosecution Service to charge 22-year-old Phillip Simelane with killing Christina Edkins.
Is this standard? Wouldn't murder have some sort of automatic permission to be charged? I thought seeking permission from the CPS was for more complex or less serious crimes where a decision needs to be made if there is sufficient evidence for a trial or if it may not be in the public interest to pursue it.
