Only a third of Sky subscribers even bother with the hd pack, and this thread has even revealed that a most revered and respected poster (!) chooses to record sd variants in order to save pvr space. Hd is important to a lot of people, but it really doesn't matter to a hell of a lot of people either.
Lets wait and see until both companies are more on an even keel whilst Sky may have the greater channel range cable has always had a vastly superior On Demand range and the added bonus of Fibre BB , most of my family who've chose VM have done so primarily because of poor ADSL estimates.

Over the next year or two I expect VM to ramp up there HD offering and with BT's fibre footprint already larger than VM's competition is sure to get interesting.
