Time moves on though, how long ago did you leave as according to this site a field service technician can earn 14k (I assume thats an apprentice salary) to 38K, so seems like the previous poster is telling the truth and why wouldn't he?
The report also states that VM pay 3% below market rates and BT 5% below. The Network Engineer scale in BT is 20K to 59K so perhaps you are paid based on your skills?
