TH is asking for your modem stats (http:\\192.168.100.1) because of the first sentence in your initial post. The stats might indicate an issue either with the modem or with the circuit - for example if the upstream was maxing out at 61 dBmv power or thereabouts.
Addressing your second point about tider cables, etc, the SH is a reasonable device up to the point where you expect wireless to work well. As a wired router only, with firewall and Wireless switched off, it has the legs and stability to serve your wired devices. If you want to use wireless, that's where the problems begin; not always - but sufficient to fill huge chunks of this forum!
So my advice to you is in any case migrate to a SH but in modem mode with your own router attached. Wires don't matter anywhere near as much as does a decent internet experience.
But we can come back to that after we've seen your modem stats in order to to assess external conditions.
