Because if you don't return the kit, you will be charged to replace it, plus it's courteous to try and return the kit in a state that means it can be used again - especially as replacing damaged kit has to paid for somehow

Up to you, but personally I'd phone back and see if they can get someone out to collect it. If they so no, then the bag will have to do.
