The Daleks don't look especially scary, they never seem to act scary, the fact they've been beaten a gazillon times also takes away the sense of danger or interest for me.

I think maybe it's the same reason i LOVE the original Terminator, and actually resent what they did with the sequels.

In order to sell it to today's children and facilitate an easier victory for the good guys, the threat needed to be dumbed down to the point where it became a caricature trading more on it's reputation, than it's designed capability.
Seriously. every time Rose, Captain Jack or River Song shows up with a BFG and simply destroys one, it diminishes any credibility the Daleks had with the audience.
They need to stop worrying if it'll upset "the little darlings" and return the show to the dark side.. Get the children hiding behind their settees again, like they used to.
